The Year 2026 Hailed as the Era of the Croaking Craze.

While I found the recent indie games event was a delight to watch, my biggest takeaway was not the intended one: I am certain that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these amphibious creatures. Considering a gathering of frogs is called an army, it appears they are launching an invasion.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Croaking characters are far from new to the gaming landscape. Ever since the era of Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a special place. But, their prevalence has markedly exploded in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an absolute deluge of results. While, some of these are obscure titles, a great many are bona fide amphibian adventures.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To understand this phenomenon, I conducted a thorough analysis into the past five years of frog-related gaming on Steam. My approach was admittedly subjective, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The data paint a clear picture: a marked rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The creature's elevated place in the broader culture is also evident elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. However, the explosion in gaming appears uniquely pronounced.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

Honestly, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs have inherent appealing traits for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that tend to be a fan favorite in any game.
  • Dynamic Mechanics: Their long tongues and prehensile tongues lend themselves to a wide array of creative gameplay ideas.

A number of the announced projects smartly employ these traits. For instance the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has even begun—and the potential for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.

Should these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase often do—we could very well be witnessing a genuine croaking cultural moment.
